With the hype and praise that it has been receiving on social media, there is no doubt that Helen Scheuerer’s The Oremere Chronicles has caught my eye. But due to my uncooperative schedule, I have yet to read her wonderful series. Thankfully though, Helen herself reached out to me to do an interview in lieu with Reign of Mist’s release. I couldn’t let the opportunity pass up to know more about her lovely series.

The realm’s darkest secret is out.
The cruelty of the capital and the power-hungry King Arden have scattered Bleak and her companions across the continents.
On the run in a foreign land, Bleak finds herself tied to some unexpected strangers. When the answers she yearns for are finally within reach, she must face the hard truths of her past, and take her fate into her own hands before it’s too late.
Meanwhile, secrets and magic unravel as a dark power corrupts the realm. Bleak’s friends are forced to decide where their loyalties lie, and who, if anyone, they can trust.
But one thing is certain: war is coming, and they must all be ready when it does.
Intriguing and action-packed, Reign of Mist is the second instalment in Helen Scheuerer’s epic YA fantasy series, The Oremere Chronicles.
AN INTERVIEW WITH HELEN SCHEUERER
Do you believe that writers are similar to sorcerers for having the capability to transport us to different dimensions? Why?
Haha, while as much as I’d love to think us writers have some special magical ability, in reality it’s the result of a lot of hard work. Myself and the other writers I know work really hard at our craft to be able to transport our readers to other realms.
When did you know that you want to write about the amazing world of the Valians?
Even before I started Heart of Mist, I knew that if I was going to write YA fantasy, I wanted to be able to flip some gender stereotypes upside down. I love reading about strong female characters, and even more, I loved the idea of a matriarchal society. I was also always fascinated by the history of the Spartans and how they raised their young to be warriors from practically infants, they were a big part of the inspiration behind the Valian warriors.
What traits do you share with Bleak? What about with your other characters?
Bleak’s a tricky one, because for the most part of Heart of Mist, she’s deeply flawed and quite unlikeable. But if I had to pick a trait I share with her, it might be her resilience and her stubbornness.
As for the other characters… I can definitely relate to the complicated but enduring friendship between Swinton and Fiore. I love the connection between these two, and definitely have a handful of friendships that have lasted over the years in a similar way.
For you, what makes a good villain?
For me, an authentic villain is complicated. They’re not just black and white, but rather, shades of grey. There are parts of a good villain a reader can relate to, which is what makes their evil actions all the more tragic, that there was potential there for them to do good instead.
If you’re going to compare Heart of the Mist to a type of dish, what would it be and why?
Oh my god, this is actually one of the hardest questions someone’s asked me! Maybe spaghetti bolognese? Because it’s a classic, and it’s a meal you come back to time and time again? At least I sure do.
But apart from that, I’m totally stumped!
Using only 3 emotions, what would the readers feel while reading the sequel, Reign of Mist?
Intrigue, shock and hopefully, eager for more.
Helen Scheuerer is a YA fantasy author from Sydney, Australia. Reign of Mist is the second book in her high fantasy trilogy, The Oremere Chronicles. After writing literary fiction for a number of years, Helen was inspired to return to her childhood love of fantasy thanks to novels like Throne of Glass, The Queen’s Poisoner and The Queen of the Tearling.

Helen’s love of writing and books led her to pursue a Bachelor of Creative Arts, majoring in Creative Writing at the University of Wollongong. While the Kindling books were being published, Helen also completed a Masters of Publishing at the University of Sydney.
Helen now lives by the beach and writes full time. She has many more books planned for the future.
